Voces Caelestium: Mahler's Symphony No. 2 - Gaza Emergency Appeal

Join Voces Caelestium for our 10th Anniversary Charity Concert as we present Mahler’s 2nd Symphony on Sunday, September 22nd, 7pm at the Sydney Town Hall, to raise funds for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund's life-saving work in Gaza. 100% of proceeds raised will be donated, thanks to the cost of the concert being covered by our sponsors.

Gaza is currently the world's most dangerous place to be a child, according to UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder. Children in Gaza are cut off from the basics they need to survive, and over 1.7 million people have been displaced. There is no clean water, leaving children at risk of dying from severe dehydration. Many people are being forced to turn to contaminated water sources, leaving them vulnerable to illness or an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Over three-quarters of Gaza’s buildings, including all hospitals, have been destroyed in Israeli bombings and are uninhabitable, and a recent Lancet investigation calculated that 186,000 Gazans have been killed in the past 9 months – 8% of Gaza’s population.

There is nowhere safe left for children in Gaza. There is no space left and no safety anywhere. Families have no options left – they are trapped.

Children in the region are facing a catastrophic food crisis, lack of shelter, limited access to medical assistance, and living in a state of terror.

We will symbolically present Gustav Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony with an ensemble from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, UNSW, and musicians from the greater Sydney area. This event will support humanitarian aid that will save lives in Gaza in the face of a complete blockade of food, water, power, fuel, medicine, and relentless airstrikes by Israel, totalling a greater amount of destructive power than all the strikes on Dresden, Hamburg and London combined in the Second World War in what the International Court of Justice has said plausibly amounts to genocide.

As musicians, this horrific situation calls to our humanity, and begs us to act as community-builders to bring people together in an act of collective witnessing, grieving and giving. Come join us to give the children of Gaza the life-saving resources they need to survive.

Please note that we have changed our charity from Save the Children to Palestine Children's Relief Fund due to our original choice not currently being able to get aid into Gaza as a result of Israel's blockade.
