David Thomas, NSW Big Ideas Oncology Seminar

Please join us at UNSW on Monday the 30th of September for the upcoming NSW Big Idea Oncology Seminar where we will hear from Professor David Thomas who will be discussing what the field of oncology might look like in 2040. The seminar will then be followed by a short networking session from 13:30-14:00 where lunch will be provided.

Prof David Thomas is the inaugural Director of the Centre for Molecular Oncology at the University of New South Wales, and Head of the Genomic Cancer Medicine Laboratory at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. As a clinician-scientist, his focus is on the application of genomic technologies to the understanding and management of cancer, particularly sarcoma. He established the not-for-profit company, Australian Genomic Cancer Medicine Centre, trading as Omico, to lead a national precision medicine program for patients with rare and early-onset cancers. He has over 200 research publications, including lead or senior author papers in Science, Cancer Cell, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Lancet Oncology.

Title: Oncology in 2040

Oncology is undergoing fundamental change, driven by scientific advances that include genomics, molecular and cellular biology, artificial intelligence and robotics. Translating these insights has in turn depended on advances in rational drug development, and in technologies related to early detection. In this talk, I will use this framework to imagine what cancer might look like in 2040, from an individual and social perspective.

This event is hosted by the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, and the Centre for Molecular Oncology.
