“A Good Death is an Amazing Experience”: Barriers and Enablers to Inclusive Palliative Care for Gender and Sexuality Diverse People in Australia

Terminally ill people should be provided quality palliative care (PC) to enhance their quality of life. Gender and sexuality diverse people are often exposed to increased stressors throughout their life which may make health service engagement particularly difficult. In this two-phase research conducted in conjunction with LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, what gender and sexuality diverse people in Australia perceived as barriers and enablers to inclusive palliative care engagement were investigated. The results of surveys and semi-structured interviews suggested that barriers and enablers were reported at institutional, relational and individual levels, and differed for different groups of gender and sexuality diverse people. Research results can be used to inform policy and have been integrated into free e-modules for health professionals hosted by LGBTIQ+ Health Australia.
