Feel Sakamoto’s visionary legacy in his final theatre piece that transcends time and reality
Wade through a watery, meditative dreamscape of sound and moving images
In dreams, the logic of time as we understand it often ceases to exist. And this is also true with TIME, a masterful collaboration between Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, sought-after multidisciplinary artist Shiro Takatani and internationally renowned dancer Min Tanaka. Together, they have crafted a poignant theatrical dreamscape that transports “time” beyond reality.
With references to and conceptual roots in Mugen Noh, a category of Japanese Noh theatre, TIME transports the audience into a riveting dreamscape. Featuring an original score by Sakamoto, captivating visual design by Takatani and a heartrending performance by Tanaka, TIME unfolds through a series of moving images on a watery stage, accompanied by music and sounds created specifically for this work.
Text extracted from classical Asian literature also highlights the paradox between illusion and reality, delicately entwined into a loose narrative about humanity’s struggle to reconciliate dreams and reality, conveying the notion that “time is an illusion”. Along with acclaimed shō player Mayumi Miyata and renowned dance artist Rin Ishihara, TIME seamlessly fuses performance and installation to deliver a meditative theatrical experience like no other.
TIME was Sakamoto’s final theatre piece and it made its premiere at the Holland Festival in 2021. At the 2025 HKAF, you can experience Sakamoto’s visionary legacy yourself through this visual and aural experience that transcends the boundaries of time.
