The Rumbling In-between delves into the trajectories of sound as a medium and concept through the works of Singapore artists ila + bani haykal and Tini Aliman, alongside Indonesian artists Julian Abraham 'Togar', Riar Rizaldi, as well as Danarto dkk., an interdisciplinary collective of artists and researchers.
In this exhibition, rumbling connotes the natural, physical, melodic, and mechanical sounds and vibrations that inhabit our everyday lives. Evocations of this deep, continuous and resonant sound act as a conduit to investigate socio-cultural aspects of our sonic environments and how we perceive, recognise, respond and negotiate with our auditory spaces. Although explorations of sonic elements run consistent in all the works in the exhibition, the artworks also lie at the nexus of installation, sculpture, video and literature, and capture the interdisciplinary nature of sound studies. By bridging the visual and aural, the works endeavour to investigate the impacts of sound on our lived experiences and how history, memory, imagination and our environments have shaped how we experience the thick events of listening.
This exhibition is co-curated with Hasana Editions, an artistic platform focused on archiving aural production and sound-based art practices by building regional and international connections between sound artists, conceptual artists, media artists, performance artists and contemporary musicians.
