Masterpieces from Nureyev’s career featuring stars from the Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet and Hamburg Ballet, in an extravagant tribute that pays homage to the legend
Ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev was one of the first male dancers to have a great influence on the history, style and public perception of ballet. Nureyev raised the profile of male dancers to an entirely new level, becoming a visionary who revitalised the classics and broke down barriers between ballet and modern dance as a performer, choreographer and ultimately Artistic Director of the Paris Opera Ballet, where he nurtured such extraordinary talents as Sylvie Guillem, Nicolas Le Riche and Manuel Legris. In the 30 years since his death, Nureyev’s legacy has continued to grow through the artists he worked with and inspired, and through the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, which supports the development of ballet worldwide.
Now the giant of the ballet world is being honoured by the Nureyev & Friends ballet gala. The programme consists of extracts lovingly selected from key works in Nureyev’s transformative career, from his early days with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad to his directorship in Paris. It showcases the range of Nureyev’s talent, with deeply emotional as well as bravura moments, and encompasses his signature roles, original choreography and definitive stagings of the classics.
The gala will feature a host of outstanding dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Hamburg Ballet, among others. It is co-produced by Hong Kong’s own Lam Chun-wing, the first Chinese dancer to be accepted into the Paris Opera Ballet, with Charles Jude, a protégé of Nureyev as Artistic Advisor, former Royal Ballet star David Makhateli as Artistic Director and support from the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation.
