New Natural | Rolland Cheung’s Solo Exhibition Introduction

When control transforms into blankness, and order gives way to flow, we dance with nature. New Natural: Rolland Cheung Solo Exhibition will be held from May 9 to June 2, 2025, exploring the boundaries between the unnatural and the natural. This exhibition will not only showcase Hong Kong's largest resin artwork, but also see Hong Kong resin artist Rolland Cheung breaking through two-dimensional art creation by combining elements of resin art, light, motion sensors, sound, and mechanical installations to create an immersive multi-sensory experience that explores the relationship between humanity ("他") and nature ("然"). The theme "new natural" suggests a profound connection between humanity and nature—not one of separation, but of co-creation—colliding in creativity and evolving through interaction. The exhibition interprets themes of deviation, ambiguity, and negative space, creating a unique experience of our interdependence with nature, inviting viewers to wander and reflect, fostering an awareness that humanity is no longer the center of the world.

Embracing the Poetics of Uncontrol through Resin Art

The artist explores the meaning of human existence in awe, serving as a metaphor for faith—a reverence for the unknown forces that surround us. Nature is the symbol of this faith—vast, profound, awe-inspiring, and captivating— and encompasses not just mountains and rivers but also the unpredictability and uncontrollability inherent in existence. Rolland uses resin as his primary medium, capturing the flow of pigments before solidification, the random settling of bubbles, and the cracks formed by temperature changes—all these "imperfections" become specimens of time. "I hope to embrace these 'accidents' that transform uncontrollable variables into opportunities within my creations, allowing the unpredictable to become the 'negative space' of my artwork," Rolland explains. This exhibition is not merely a depiction of nature but a profound reflection on the interaction between humanity and nature, inviting viewers to experience the beauty of blankness and explore the infinite possibilities that arise from this co-creation.

Immerse In the Negative Space and Multi-Sensory Art Experience

This exhibition will debut 10 new artworks by Rolland Cheung, of which he uses resin art, light, spatial design, and electronic installations to explore the relationship between the natural and unnatural. As both a resin artist and an interior designer, Rolland meticulously designs the atmosphere, ambience and experience with the use of motion sensors for viewers to interact and immerse in the multisensory “New Natural” journey. He says, "New Natural acts as a mirror, reflecting the distance and fusion between us and nature." Viewers will start with the first artwork, “At the very beginning”, and embark on a journey through each piece, delving into the process of negative space. Here, the boundaries between all things seem to blur, leaving space for exploration and imagination. Our body, which is the closest form of nature to oneself, becomes part of that blankness. In the exhibition, viewers will not only see every brushstroke and color transformation of the artworks but also feel the spatial emptiness and untouched blankness from the experience. This state allows them to gradually learn to empty their minds, experiencing the poetry of uncontrol in silence, reflecting on themselves and rethinking their relationship with nature.
