manτεία evolved from a series of artistic workshops led by Roberto Alonso Trillo and Peter Nelson, where artists were encouraged to create digital creative bridges, where a signal from one artwork might drive an action in another - a process known as multimodal mapping. In this 60-minute performance, audiences will witness a giant mechanical sculpture that creates a musical heartbeat that drives another work made purely from light, sound, and smoke. The irregular rhythm of the giant clock is amplified via a bank of subwoofers to drive turbulence through a tower of smoke, which is then translated by a computer into animation and sound. The central human performer in manτεία acts as an oracle, who speaks for two AI models, one trained on works of Western philosophy and one trained on Chinese classics. These two AI systems provide unique perspectives on the artworks in manτεία and explore how we might relate to a future driven by the automated wisdom of such cultural calculating machines.
