Leading cellist Nicolas Altstaedt brings a showstopping recital programme showcasing the brightest gems in the solo cello repertoire. Opening with monumental French composer Dutilleux’s Trois Strophes sur le Nom de Sacher, a poetic piece in three stanzas composed in tribute to the important Swiss conductor Paul Sacher at the request of legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, Altstaedt will move on to the fifth of Bach’s Cello Suites, of which the incredible textural and musical construction, as well as demand for technical excellence and emotional depth, need no introduction. The programme will culminate in the Mount Everest for all cellists – Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello, an extraordinarily powerful masterpiece incorporating devilish virtuosity, musical innovation and Hungarian folk influence all into one.
