Contagion and Containment: Quarantine Sketches (A Work-in-progress reading)
30 September 2022
FRIDAY
19:30
A play read of “Contagion & Containment: Quarantine Sketches”, a new work-in-development script by acclaimed Singaporean playwright Jean Tay

Inspired by the histories at Singapore’s old quarantine sites, such as St John’s Island, the old St Andrew’s Mission Hospital and Middleton Hospital, playwright Jean Tay presents a play read of “Contagion & Containment: Quarantine Sketches”. Spanning over a century, the scenes bring together characters from different walks of life who encounter one another in quarantine. From coolies and pilgrims to a polio-stricken boy in an iron lung, a mother suffering from leprosy to the healthcare workers struggling to deal with unknown diseases – we see how they try to overcome their fear of the unknown and the distance between one another.

It includes a talkback session after the read, together with the playwright and director.

Advisory: Content may be more suited for persons 16 years and above.
