Throughout their fruitful collaboration dating back more than three decades, baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber have engaged in a musical dialogue that has propelled them to the loftiest heights of interpretation.
The artists have become bywords for sensitivity, cerebral depth and seeming perfection in a vast Lieder repertoire that they have made their own. Functioning as a single expressive unit, the duo has performed in innumerable sold-out concerts before enthusiastic audiences. Internationally celebrated, the artists have also received numerous prizes including the Echo Klassik, the BBC Music Magazine Award, the International Classical Music Award, the Gramophone Classical Music Award and the Robert Schumann Prize. Their recording of the complete songs by Schumann was named Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice, while The Guardian provided a five-star review, stating: “Schumann brings out the best in baritone Christian Gerhaher on this striking recording with pianist Gerold Huber.”
Gerhaher and Huber bring to the Hong Kong Arts Festival an exceptional performance devoted to song cycles by Robert Schumann, the master of the marriage between music and poetry. The programme will include Liederkreis, Op 39—one of the greatest song cycles of the 19th century and one of the composer’s best-known canonical song cycles. Gerhaher and Huber will be displaying a degree of intimacy seldom equalled in other kinds of music, as they communicate the most subtle and evanescent emotions to the audience.
