The Woodentops started as a four-piece band and released their first single, "Why Why Why", in 1984. The single was an immediate success, reaching number 15 in the UK charts. The band released two more singles before releasing their debut album, Giant, in 1985. The album featured their biggest hit, "Well Well Well", which reached number 10 in the UK charts.
The Woodentops continued to record and tour throughout the 1980s, releasing several more albums and singles. The band's sound developed over the years, incorporating elements of folk and funk into their music.
