Pulp is a British rock pop band that gained popularity in the 1990s. Formed in Sheffield in 1978, the band went through several lineup changes before settling into its most famous configuration: Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboard), Steve Mackey (bass), Nick Banks (drums), and Mark Webber (guitar).
The band's sound is characterized by Cocker's distinctive vocals and sharp lyrics, which often satirize British society and culture. Pulp's music combines the energy and attitude of punk rock with the melodies and hooks of pop, creating a distinct and memorable sound that has influenced countless artists.
Pulp released their first album, It, in 1983, but it wasn't until the release of their breakthrough album, Different Class, in 1995 that they achieved widespread success. Different Class's hit singles, including "Common People", "Disco 2000", and "Sorted for E's & Wizz", propelled Pulp to the top of the charts and cemented their status as one of the most important bands of the Britpop era.
Despite their success, Pulp remained true to their independent roots, and their music continued to be driven by Cocker's unique vision and songwriting. Their albums, including This Is Hardcore, We Love Life, and the compilation Hits, are widely regarded as classics of the genre.
In 2002, Pulp went on hiatus following the release of We Love Life, but the band performed several reunion shows in the following years. In 2011, they played a highly anticipated set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, and in 2012 they headlined a number of festivals across Europe.
Although they never achieved the same level of commercial success as some of their Britpop peers, Pulp's influence on modern music is undeniable. They paved the way for countless indie rock bands and inspired a generation of musicians with their unique blend of punk rock spirit and pop sensibility.
Whether you're a lifelong fan or just discovering Pulp's music for the first time, their timeless songs and iconic performances are not to be missed.
