6:30 p.m.

Immigration was a central issue President Donald Trump ran and won on, promising “mass deportations” and rousing fears with dehumanizing rhetoric. In this heated political context, join us for a more nuanced and thoughtful conversation about immigration policy under the new administration. Experts will discuss what changes can and cannot legally be implemented, what communities are more at risk, the potential impact on the economy, the future of border security, and what can be done to protect immigrants’ rights. Featuring New York City Council Member Alexa Avilés, chair of the Immigration Committee; Muzaffar Chishti, senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute at NYU School of Law; Hyein Lee, chief operating officer at TheDream.US; and Liza G. Steele, associate professor of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the CUNY Graduate Center. Moderated by Philip Kasinitz, presidential professor of sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Presented with the Ph.D. and M.A. Program in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies; the Ph.D. Program in Sociology; and the M.A. Program in International Migration Studies.
