Rumors, Disinformation, Conspiracy Theories – From Gutenberg to Social Media and AI

We live in anxious times where the unfolding powers of social media and AI have led to a surge of rumors, conspiracy, and disinformation. But this is not new. Media revolutions have frequently joined with populist ferment to create monsters.

From Luther’s attack on the Pope to our current moment, this conference examines the media histories of rumors, disinformation, and conspiracy theories. We seek to explore the connections and disconnections among circulation, repetition, and belief in new political dispensations. In addition to adopting a comparative perspective on different historical periods, we also aim to theorize the modes in which new technologies and media forms have increased the circulation and acceptance of propaganda—from Gutenberg to our current moment.

Conference organized by Stefan Andriopoulos, Matthew Engelke, and Brian Larkin
