After last summer’s special house set in STUDIO, Matrixxman returns to BASEMENT to do what he does best. Simply put, he is one of the definitive US techno artists of the modern era. Matrixxman emerged at a moment when a new vision of techno was coalescing on American soil, and his breakout recordings are seminal entries in a lineage that has come to the current club culture. But like all great artists, he’s more than comfortable changing lanes. Perhaps best known for his steely, gritty sci-fi tinged techno, he can just as easily maneuver through throttling electro, stunning beauty and raw, direct club tunes. Volvox & Dominga’s set has become a can’t miss. Volvox is, of course, one of NY’s all time best. She earns equal respect from other DJs and dancers alike for her innate ability to set a room off with artful, swaggering urgency. Dominga’s boundless creative output brings a widened vision to the collaboration. Her artistic output is frankly staggering, including her long-running forward thinking live outfit Follakzoid. The collaboration between the two artists has also resulted in the FLINTA party they both run. It’s just another example of the tireless creativity and community focus exemplified by both artists. Jay York’s commitment to no-holds-barred, no-BS techno purism has resulted in some of the best tracks of the last few years. York excels at making more out of less; his productions explode out of the speakers with a feverish rush, made all the better for their sharply drawn simplicity. Like a master painter, York speaks volumes with a few, decisive gestures.
Fred P is one of the great masters of deep house to emerge in the 21st century. A paragon of NY’s jazzy, heavily swung sound, Fred P charted a course throughout the ‘00s into an exquisitely sensual sonic landscape. Few artists are quite as soulful as Fred P. Across dozens of releases on nearly every house music label of substance, he’s explored a sound that brings dancers deep into their bodies, trading in adrenaline for introspection and mystery. Toronto’s Ciel makes her debut. One of North America’s most invested community organizers, Ciel has proven to be an indefatigable creative driver. Her work, represented on labels as renowned as !K7 and Spectral Sound, as well as some of the most beloved niche imprints of the underground. A collaborative spirit, Ciel has worked alongside fellow luminaries D Tiffany, CCL and many more, crafting an indelible blend of woozy downtempo, cracking breaks and skewed, firing-on-all-cylinders club. Jason Kendig draws on the core lineage of Chicago house, extending the classic template into a rich tapestry that goes far beyond the expected. Kendig has become one of STUDIO’s most consistent artists. Lots of people can DJ well, but Kendig plays with such fluidity and fluency it’s like DJing is his mother tongue. ■ No photos or videos ■ Ticket purchase does not guarantee entrance ■ No phone use on the dancefloor ■ The dance floor is for dancing, not conversation ■ No glowing/flashing clothes or items ■ Respect other people's space, no shuffling ■ Consent is mandatory ■ Zero tolerance for racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ableism or any form of discrimination ■ Take care of each other, alert our staff if somebody isn't feeling well ■ Violating the house rules will result in removal
