Whisky Sponge Tasting with The Whisky List

Scotland based Independent Bottler, Decadent Drinks with their wide ranging labels WhiskySponge, Equinox & Solstice, RumSponge, ArmagnacSponge, CognacSponge & NAS (Notable Age Statements). The brainchild (or fever dream) of Angus MacRaild, a drinks writer who earned the moniker the "WhiskySponge" for his ability to seemingly soak up all the good whisky at a dinnertable, Decadent Drinks started as a passion project, and has grown into a (not too) serious bottler of premium sipping spirits. Distributed in Australia by The Whisky List, the labels are notoriously fun and satirical, usually with "Sponge" appearing next to icons of the whisky industry or in all kinds of wacky scenarios.

Being long time friends of The Whisky List and of the Sponge, we have always wanted to a bottling together but we were just waiting for the perfect cask to come along. After almost a year of hunting, this Ben Nevis came across Angus’ desk and we knew it was the one. Ten years old, verging on eleven years, this Ben Nevis meow-tured most of its life in a Refill Butt before a short finish in a refill Quarter Cask that took the classic Nevis savoury-sweet character to the next level. As soon as Angus mentioned that it was even better than the last Nevis he bottled we knew that this was the one! Featuring Yao’s beloved cat Anchovy on the label in a kawaii and manga style artwork of the bar and of course us (Kelvin & Yao), and the tasting notes are equally feline-themed.

During the launch tasting of this Ben Nevis, we will also be tasting a few other spectacular bottlings from the Sponge. Presenting the whiskies to us will be Oliver Maruda & Emma Cookson of The Whisky List. Whether you like cats or if you like good whiskies, or both, you MUST not miss this.
