The Psychology of Cults with Sam Jahara

The Psychology of Cults with Sam Jahara
13 November 2024
WEDNESDAY
7 p.m.

The 1960s-80s was a period of rapid social and cultural change, seeing revolutions in art, social order and acceptance of new beliefs. Among this cultural landscape, however, was the increasing occurrence of reports of cults and notorious figures like Charles Manson and Jim Jones who have become etched into the public memory of the period.

Today cults are back on the rise and, thanks to social media, you may be closer than ever before to being drawn into a cult. With modern technology, cult leaders today have an effortless international reach and gain followers quickly. Yet how do such leaders emerge? Why do people fall for their tactics, and, most importantly, how can you avoid being drawn in?

In this talk we will explore the psychology of cult leaders and what makes people feel drawn to them, our vulnerabilities to joining such groups, and how cultic dynamics can apply to other unhealthy and toxic relationships between individuals, families, and organisations. We will also spend some time thinking about the most vulnerable victims of cults – the children who are born and grow up in them – brought in against their choice, and the lifelong impact on brain development, attachment relationships, and a sense of self identity. Finally, we will discuss the journey of leaving cults and the recovery process.

Please note that there will be case study examples and discussions which include themes of sexual, physical, psychological, and spiritual abuse of both adults and children.

Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
