What is the story of Oedipus?

Written by Sophocles in 429 BC, this epic tragedy explores the nature of fate and the perils of hubris.  Born to King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes, Oedipus faces a grim prophecy predicting he will kill his father and marry his mother. This Greek mythological play explores topics of fate and free will, with tragic consequences.
