Healthy buildings – the missing link for a sustainable future?

This event will feature the Inaugural Lecture of Prof Marcella Ucci introduced by Prof Jacqui Glass and a guest talk from Prof Sani Dimitroulopoulou.

The talks and debate session will explore the role of healthy buildings in a sustainable future, including: links with the net-zero and equity agendas, the importance of interdisciplinary understandings of indoor environmental quality, and the implications for policy and professional practice of embedding health into building design and operation.

This event is in collaboration with the UK Indoor Environments Group (UKIEG).


About the speakers

is Professor in Healthy and Sustainable Buildings at UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering and Deputy Director of Academic Operations at The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources.

She researches how buildings should be designed, upgraded and managed in order to support health and wellbeing, tackle inequalities and reduce environmental impacts. She has expertise of mixed methods research, including building performance monitoring and modelling, evaluation of indoor air quality such as moisture and dampness, active design, and community engagement.

She is Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has been departmental Director of Education (2020-2023) for the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources, with oversight of all taught and doctoral activities. She has led the development and launch of the new MSc 'Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings', of which she was Course Director between 2017 and 2019. Prof Ucci was Chair (2012-2017) and is now Vice-Chair of the UK Indoor Environments Group (UKIEG), and co-chairs the 'Health and Wellbeing' Working Group in the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Sani Dimitroulopoulou is a Principal Environmental Public Health Specialist in Air Quality and Public Health within the Environmental Hazards and Emergencies Department, UK Health Security Agency (formerly PHE), leading on indoor air quality and health. She is a Visiting Professor at UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering.

She has thirty-years experience on air pollution and health. Her research interests include exposure assessment to air pollution, based on modelling and monitoring of outdoor and indoor air pollution and ventilation, health impact assessments, development of environmental public health indicators and setting up indoor air quality guidelines.

She works closely with colleagues from UK Government Departments (e.g. DHSC, DfE, DLUHC, Defra, DESNZ, HSE) and Organisations (e.g. WHO, NICE, CIBSE, the Royal Colleges RCP/RCPCH, BSI) to provide expert advice on indoor air quality and health.

Sani is a Member of the CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) Knowledge Generation Panel (KGP). She is the Chair of UK Indoor Environments Group (UKIEG) and recently selected to be Fellow of esteemed International Academy of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ).
