Molécula – Christopher Houweling

SomoS Arts is pleased to announce the exhibition Molécula, Decoupage installation constructed at SomoS exhibition space by Mexican visual artist Christopher Houweling. The show is presented as part of the Sellerie Weekend festival, the Berlin off-program for independent and communally organized art spaces during the Gallery Weekend. 

The Molécula installation, developed during Houweling’s three-month residency at SomoS, centers on a large circular form created through drawing, painting, cutting, and assembling intricate paper motifs. Referencing traditional Decoupage through a contemporary lens, this meditative method—known in German as Mönchsarbeit (“monk’s work”)—emphasizes the link between craft and spirituality. Rather than serving as an illusionistic window, the layered paper structure subtly projects into the viewer’s space, shifting between flatness and volume, image and object, and proposing a dynamic, embodied mode of seeing.

Beyond its visual complexity, the installation invites viewers into a sensory exploration of life’s subtle interconnections. Inspired by the rhythms and environment of the artist’s life by the sea, the work conveys Houweling’s belief that creativity begins with observation. The installation further draws from Houweling’s personal experiences with natural medicine and the sacred cultural traditions surrounding psychedelic plants. Growing up in a culture where these practices are approached with care and respect, the artist developed a deep connection to nature as a source of knowledge. These influences are reflected in the installation’s layered paper forms, where movement, sound, and light converge to evoke a contemplative experience of the interconnectedness between inner states and the surrounding world.
